My love for animals began at a very young age. We always had family dogs and cats growing up. When I was eight I purchased my very own first pet with my birthday money. He was a beautiful white dwarf bunny, named Bugsy. We developed quite a bond. Bugsy would follow me everywhere when we were outside. He would snort in annoyance if anyone else tried to feed him. Bugsy was a huge part of my life for 12 years. Prior to Bugsy, I had not known that a rabbit could be such a wonderful pet.
After High School, I attended college studying a variety of subjects including Nutrition and Respiratory Therapy. In 2001, at almost 22 years of age I inherited my first puppy from my brother John. She was a black lab/beagle mix whom I named Sidney. Sidney quickly became my number one priority. She had the sweetest disposition. We fell into a routine very quickly. It was Sidney that showed me that the love of a dog is like no other.
At 24 years old I purchased my first home and Sidney and I moved in. We were quickly joined by Keesha, a beautiful yellow lab mix puppy. I rescued Keesha from a very unfortunate situation. Sidney took her right into her care with all of her motherly instincts. The two became inseparable. After only a short period of time, we welcomed our third sweet puppy into our family. A very handsome Golden Retriever named Jeter. Jeter became the boss right away. Sidney and Keesha had such an incredible bond, and though they did accept Jeter, he was more into following me around. He became my shadow, my wake up call, my best buddy.
Anybody that knew me, knew that my dogs meant everything to me. It was always, “Hey, aren't you the one that is always walking your three beautiful dogs around Arkport?" Yes, that was me. I always walked all three of them at the same time and sometimes I paid dearly! I was dragged through several yards, sidewalks, cornfields, and down hills while walking all three of my large dogs together. Fearful for their safety if the were to see another dog I risked my life. They were my babies. Often I would hear, “If I come back in a second life, I would want to come back as one of your dogs." Everybody that knows me, knows I love my dogs so very much.
I was blessed to have had all three of my dogs for over 14 years. I am now blessed to have my fourth dog sweet Ella, who reminds me so much of my Sidney with her sweet and gentle disposition. Ella joined our family about eight months after I lost Sidney. Since then I have also lost Keesha, as well as Jeter most recently. Jeter's passing took me by surprise; he was still 14 going on 8.. Sadly enough he went into liver failure. A piece of my heart went with each of my babies as I said goodbye to them. It has been three of the hardest situations I have ever been through.
My passion for these dogs as well as the many other people's dogs whom I have cared for over the years while providing dog walking and animal home care services lead me to realize that the rest of my life needs to be spent with dogs in a happy, fun atmosphere. That insight has lead to the start of Paws Up, my own dog boarding and day care center. With an amazing amount of support from my family and friends I am finally making my dream come true.
